Minimum Wages

The Minimum Wages Act 1948 in India guarantees payment of minimum wages to workers in different sectors, including the agriculture sector. In spite of this legal requirement, payment of (much) less than minimum wages has long been an issue in the agriculture sector, especially in hybrid seed production.
Towards this emerging issue of paying minimum wages for farm labour in seed production farms, ECHO has been developing strategies in collaboration with ECHO member companies, expert agencies and industry forums. Some of these strategies include creating awareness for seed companies on latest legislations applicable to each of the states, conducting field-level assessments and developing pilot models in collaboration with local stakeholders.
